The Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, presided over the constitution of the State Coordination and Direction Committee (CECOD) this week, a state device aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of the hundreds of thousands of people who will travel through the northern half of the Peninsula to observe the solar eclipse next Wednesday, August 12.

Grande-Marlaska called on citizens to act with responsibility and utmost caution, as the astronomical event coincides with a period of high risk for forest fires. “High temperatures and the accumulated dryness of the vegetation fuel require heightened preventive measures,” warned the minister, who emphasized that enjoying the eclipse must be compatible with protecting the natural environment.

The CECOD has established a Unified Command Post at the National Emergency Center (CENEM) and has identified five priority areas of attention, including crowds, mobility, and health risks. With forecasts of between 1.8 and 2.9 million trips to more than 350 observation points, 123 exclusion zones have been set, and police presence will be reinforced, with more than 33,600 agents mobilized to ensure safety and orderly mobility during the event. The Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Business anticipates an increase in traffic to the observation areas of between 30% and 100%.

In light of the expected large influx of vehicles, the Government of Spain has established an Interministerial Commission for the Eclipse Trio, which includes 13 ministries and involves the participation of autonomous communities and scientific organizations. Its objective is to ensure the safety and mobility of citizens during this event. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has classified the eclipse as a High Traffic Impact Event (EVAAT) and has developed a specific plan that combines preventive measures, surveillance, and constant communication with users.

Additionally, the DGT has issued recommendations for safe travel, such as avoiding unnecessary trips, planning the journey in advance, and choosing suitable observation points. Drivers are reminded to respect traffic rules and be attentive to pedestrians near observation points. The DGT will also keep traffic status information updated through its official channels, including social media and its website, to ensure that everyone who wishes to enjoy the eclipse does so safely.

In addition, the measures extend to maritime and air transport. The General Directorate of the Merchant Navy has issued safety recommendations for sailors, while Aena will take care of information and management at airports near the entire strip. Finally, the State Air Safety Agency has recalled regulations for the use of drones, emphasizing the importance of complying with current regulations to avoid risks during this unique event.
