The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, has presented its annual report ‘The OEPM in Figures’.
This document details the registration applications in various modalities of Industrial Property (IP) in Spain, providing a clear overview of the country’s innovative ecosystem and its development over the years.
In 2025, Spain has stood out for its remarkable performance in protected innovation, with a historic record of 57,158 trademark applications, representing an increase of 11.5% compared to 2024. Additionally, patent applications have also experienced a significant increase of 12.1%, reaching a total of 1,450. This positive outlook is complemented by a 14.8% growth in industrial design applications, which totaled 16,032 registrations, the best figure since 2019.
Although Spain is recognized for its progress in gender equality in the innovation sector, the report reveals that the gender gap persists. Only 24.6% of the inventors of registered patents last year were women. However, in certain sectors such as Biotechnology and Nanotechnology, female representation is quite high. In the field of trademarks, women filed 36% of the applications, excelling in categories such as oils and fats, where their participation reaches 64%.
