The Forum for the Social Integration of Immigrants (FISI) has presented its Annual Report for 2025 at the headquarters of the Representation of the European Commission in Spain, revealing that applications for international protection reached 144,396 during the past 2025.
Although this figure represents a slight decrease compared to the 167,366 applications in 2024, Spain remains the third country in the EU in total number of applications, accounting for 17% of the European total.
The Secretary of State for Migration, Pilar Cancela, who inaugurated the presentation event, highlighted that these figures position Spain at the forefront of European operational management in asylum and international protection. The analysis of the applications reveals that the most represented nationalities are Venezuela, Mali, Colombia, and Peru, and 7,838 refugee statuses were granted mainly to citizens from Nicaragua, Colombia, Afghanistan, and Honduras.
The year 2025 was also marked by the full entry into force of the new Immigration Regulation, approved by Royal Decree 1155/2024, which has had a positive impact on residence applications, increasing by almost 50%. However, the report emphasizes the need to address disparities in access to the labor market and public services, as well as discrimination in access to housing, aspects that complicate the social integration of migrant people in the country.
