Alex Ellis, the ambassador of the United Kingdom, visited Almería last Tuesday, specifically the town of Bédar, the scene of the fires that ravaged the area last week and caused at least five victims of British nationality, who have already been identified.
The visit aimed to meet with local British citizens and firsthand understand the impact that the devastating wildfire had and continues to have on the community.
In a message on the Embassy’s social media, Ambassador Ellis expressed his condolences to all those affected by the tragedy and stated that “firstly I wanted to thank the regional and national authorities and the mayors as well for all the support they have provided from the beginning to the British community and others affected. Second, my admiration for the British community that has come together a lot to support each other and work with local authorities. Third, my deep condolences for all those who have died in this terrible incident. And fourth, to say that the British Embassy and consular services are here exactly to support all affected Britons in these very unfortunate circumstances”
According to the Europa Press agency, Ambassador Alex Ellis stated that “our consulate here in Málaga, which covers all of Andalusia, and also our consular network in Spain, is working with the affected families and also with the authorities”.
