The Training Ship “Mircea”, one of the most beloved symbols of the Romanian Naval Forces, docked at the port of Málaga last Friday, August 21, which translated into a genuine atmosphere of celebration in a year especially significant for relations between Romania and Spain, as it marks the 145th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Last Friday, the deck of the sailing ship became a space for meeting, friendship, and dialogue. The event, organized by the Embassy of Romania and the General Consulate of Romania in Seville, was attended by the mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre Prados, and gathered high representatives from the Spanish Ministry of Defense, military and civilian authorities, personalities from local Málaga life, members of the Diplomatic and consular Corps, journalists, representatives from the business sector and the Romanian community, as well as numerous friends of Romania.
In a warm and festive atmosphere, guests were able to discover Romanian maritime tradition and the history of a ship that, for generations, trains sailors and carries the name of Romania to ports around the world.
In her speech, the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of Romania, Raluca Mihăilă, highlighted the role of the Training Ship “Mircea” as a “true naval ambassador of Romanian history, tradition, and spirit.” She also emphasized that its presence in Málaga, in this commemorative year, also constitutes a recognition of the excellent cooperation between our countries in defense matters, recalling the contribution of Spain to strengthening the security of NATO’s eastern flank.
The commander of the international cruise, Gabriel Moise, and the commander of the Training Ship “Mircea”, Silviu-Marius Moraru, spoke about the ship’s training mission, the tradition it keeps alive, and the responsibility of its crew to represent Romania in every port it docks.
With each international stop, the Ship “Mircea” builds bridges between sailors, institutions, and communities, turning naval tradition into a genuine instrument of rapprochement between countries.
In a statement, the Embassy of Romania expresses its gratitude to the entire crew of the Training Ship “Mircea” for “their professionalism, dedication, and the exemplary way in which they represent Romania abroad.”
The Training Ship «Mircea» docked at the Port of Málaga and opened its decks to the public on August 22 and 23.
Over more than eight decades, the ship has contributed to the training of generations of Romanian military sailors and continues to represent Romania in international missions and voyages. Built between 1938 and 1939 at the Blohm & Voss shipyards in Hamburg, the «Mircea» is the fourth in a series of five ships of the same type, along with the «Eagle», the «Gorch Fock I», the «Gorch Fock II», and the «Sagres».
