The Army General Headquarters was the setting where the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, presided over an emotional event in which 15 members of the Spanish contingent deployed in Iraq were decorated.
The ceremony took place at the Palace of Buenavista, where a total of ten Crosses of Military Merit with Blue Distinction were awarded to nine military personnel and one civilian, as well as five Crosses of Military Merit with White Distinction to five military personnel.
During her speech, Robles highlighted the courage, strength, and generosity of the decorated individuals, emphasizing that the recognition is a tribute to their commitment not only to Spain but to humanity. “There are no words to thank this dedication, generosity, and commitment. When it comes to saving lives, they never ask where or why,” said the minister, who also emphasized the fundamental role of the Spanish Armed Forces in one of the most challenging international contexts.
The event also served to remember the complex evacuation operation that took place in March, in response to the escalating conflict in the Middle East, which was coordinated with NATO allies. Currently, Spain participates in two missions in Iraq, the NATO Mission and the ‘Inherent Resolve’ operation, highlighting the leadership of Spanish Lieutenant General Ramón Armada in the NMI, whose goal is to prevent the resurgence of terrorism and strengthen Iraqi security institutions.
