The First Vice President of the Government and Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, Carlos Cuerpo, met last Monday in Ceuta with the President of the Autonomous City, Juan Jesús Vivas, to present two proposals aimed at supporting the city in the face of the migration crisis.
Minister Cuerpo described the meeting as “very productive” and highlighted Vivas’ willingness to collaborate on these initiatives. During his speech, the First Vice President and Minister of Economy stated that the Government is “fully aware” of the difficult situation faced by the citizens of Ceuta.
Furthermore, Carlos Cuerpo explained that the response to the migration crisis has been structured in three phases, with the first focused on stopping the flow of irregular entry and ensuring security at the border. The second phase focused on humanitarian assistance and voluntary repatriation of more than 90% of the people who entered irregularly. Currently, the third phase is underway, which aims to address challenges such as the repatriation of those who do not have the right to remain in the country and the proper care for minors and asylum seekers.
To manage the challenges posed, Cuerpo announced the creation of a single command that will coordinate all the competent authorities in the region. This command will be led by the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, and will have a specialized committee that will include representatives from various institutions. Additionally, an extraordinary expansion of the Comprehensive Socioeconomic Development Plan of Ceuta was announced, which aims to strengthen the local economy and improve the living conditions of the people of Ceuta. Cuerpo reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to make all necessary resources available to the citizens.
