‘At the Service of Democracy’, by Ángel Viñas: the diplomats in the Spanish Republic

Ángel Viñas

This book reconstructs the role of the Spanish Diplomatic Corps, showing how the fracture of 1936 also extended to embassies and consulates around the world, where a decisive battle for the international legitimacy of the Republic was fought.

Based on extensive documentary research, the work rescues the trajectories of the diplomats who remained loyal to the constitutional government, analyzes the conspiracies and defections within the foreign service itself, and studies the international dimension of the conflict, illuminating a previously little-explored scenario of Spanish political history. The Spanish Civil War was also fought in the embassies: a silent battle for the international legitimacy of the Republic.

Ángel Viñas Martín (Madrid, 1941), in the photo, is a prominent Spanish economist, historian, and diplomat, considered one of the leading international experts on the Second Republic, the Spanish Civil War, and the Franco dictatorship. His figure is characterized by the combination of rigorous archival analysis and a deep international training, which has allowed him to dismantle numerous myths of traditional historiography about the conflict.
