The Spanish embassies in Europe will open their doors to contemporary art thanks to the agreement signed on March 19, 2026, between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the ”la Caixa” Foundation. The agreement, signed by Minister José Manuel Albares and the general director of the entity, Josep Maria Coronas, launches a traveling program designed to project the country’s artistic creation beyond its borders.
The project took its first step on June 2 at the Spanish Embassy in Berlin with the opening of the exhibition Fragments, quotes, and passages. Spanish artists in the Contemporary Art Collection of the ”la Caixa” Foundation (1940-1976). The inauguration was attended by Ambassador Pascual Navarro along with representatives of the foundation such as Sergi Loughney, deputy general director, and Óscar Pina, content manager of the collection.
The exhibition brings together fifteen paintings and sculptures that review the key movements of the Spanish post-war period. Among the selected pieces, two canvases by Joan Miró —Le lion (1925) and Vers l’évasion (1972)—stand out, accompanied by creations from figures such as Eduardo Chillida, Jorge Oteiza, Pablo Palazuelo, or the Equipo Crónica.
The exhibition will remain in Berlin until October 18 and can be visited by prior request for small groups, including academic and educational collectives, as well as attendees of events organized by the embassy. Starting in autumn, the exhibition will begin its tour of other European capitals. The itinerary will maintain the thematic thread dedicated to the post-war period, although the list of works may experience adjustments depending on the space and conservation of the pieces in each capital.
The agreement is supported by one of the main private collections of contemporary art in Europe. Created in 1985 and composed of nearly 1100 works of painting, sculpture, photography, and video art, it is recognized as one of the most solid and international private collections in Europe.
