The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has implemented a special device to facilitate mobility during the visit of Pope Leo XIV to Spain, scheduled from June 6 to 12, with events in Madrid, Barcelona, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
This event, considered of special public interest, could gather more than a million people, which has led the Government to coordinate more than 80 meetings between different administrations and institutions.
To meet the high demand for transport, Renfe will offer additional seats on the Cercanías Madrid and Rodalies lines, as well as an increase in the offer of Media Distancia and Avant. In Madrid, more than 1.1 million seats are expected to be reinforced during the first weekend, coinciding with the prayer vigil and the Holy Mass in Plaza de Cibeles, where attendance is expected to be between 1 and 1.5 million people.
In addition, security measures will be established, with 290 security guards and 300 customer service workers at key stations. In Barcelona, train lines will be reinforced for the scheduled events, such as the prayer at the Cathedral and the vigil at the Estadio Lluis Companys. Renfe will also activate an information plan to keep travelers informed about possible restrictions and logistical details during the Pope’s visit.
