The Spanish Social Security has reached a new record in the number of foreign affiliates, exceeding 3.36 million. In May, the average figure stands at 3,359,548, representing an increase of 111,301 employed compared to the previous month and an increase of 288,717 compared to last year. This year-on-year growth of 9.4% contrasts with the 2.5% of total affiliation in the country.
Minister Elma Saiz highlighted that foreign workers are essential for the economic development of Spain, stating that their presence is notable in key sectors such as hospitality, construction, and the agricultural sector. Furthermore, their participation in the self-employed regime is increasing, especially in high value-added areas such as IT and telecommunications.
Since May 2022, more than 900,000 jobs have been created for foreigners, representing 43.4% of the employment generated since the implementation of the labor reform. In terms of gender, for the first time, the number of foreign women affiliated exceeds 1.4 million, which accounts for 43.1% of the total foreign workers. The origin of these affiliates is varied, with Morocco leading the list, followed by Romania and Colombia.
