Fundación Alternativas presents ‘The path to a more autonomous and sovereign Europe’

The path to a more autonomous and sovereign Europe is the title of the document that the Fundación Alternativas presents next Tuesday, June 30 at 11 a.m. at the CESEDEN headquarters (Paseo de la Castellana, 61).

Changes in the global landscape – the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, Brexit, the rise of China, conflicts in the Middle East, or the new national security strategy of the U.S. – pose a very complicated new context for the action of the European Union.

It is time for Europe to face this new situation and protect our interests and values, reconsider European security and defense, and examine possible policies and initiatives that allow for adaptation to the emerging scenario.

In this critical moment, the Fundación Alternativas invites you to the presentation and debate of the working document led by Carlos Martí Sempere: The path to a more autonomous and sovereign Europe. Proposals to reduce military and technological dependence, aimed at reviewing the current architecture of European security and its capacity to achieve a strategically more autonomous and sovereign Europe, fundamentally in relation to the U.S. and China.

This report provides an integrated analysis of the elements that condition this autonomy: political, institutional, operational, economic, technological, and industrial, highlighting weaknesses, vulnerabilities, and needs, as well as the reasons or obstacles that may hinder its improvement. With this, Alternativas aims to contribute to the advancement of defense policies on the path to greater strategic autonomy, both for Spain and for the entire Union.

The event will be welcomed by Lieutenant General Miguel Ballenilla y García de Gamarra, director of the Higher Center for National Defense Studies (CESEDEN), who will then give way to the special intervention of Brigadier General Paulino García Diego, director of the Security and Defense Coordination and Studies Division.

Subsequently, the report will be presented by Diego López Garrido, executive vice president of the Fundación Alternativas, and Carlos Martí, consultant and author of the report.
