The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has participated in the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Marine Reserves of the Canary Islands, which includes the reserve of La Graciosa and the Northern Islets of Lanzarote, and that of La Restinga in El Hierro.

Both reserves are managed jointly by the Ministry and the Government of the Canary Islands. In addition, this year also marks the 25th anniversary of the La Palma reserve, which is under state responsibility. The reserve of La Graciosa and the Northern Islets of Lanzarote extends over 70,100 hectares, making it the largest marine reserve in Spain. For its part, the reserve La Restinga in El Hierro experienced significant regeneration after the underwater volcanic eruption of 2011.

During his speech, Minister Luis Planas emphasized that the management of these marine reserves is one of the most successful policies of the Ministry and a reference model both nationally and internationally in ocean protection. He stressed that these reserves are essential for promoting sustainable fishing and supporting artisanal activity, highlighting the importance of the fishing sector’s participation in the creation of these protected areas.

Planas also announced the boosting of supervision and inspection of the reserves through advanced technology, including smart cameras to combat poaching. The minister emphasized that digitalization must be a joint effort with fishermen, ensuring that they will receive the necessary support to adapt to these changes. With 12 marine reserves covering more than 105,000 hectares, Spain continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability and the protection of the marine environment.
