Registration of digital product passports in the EU

At the beginning of this week, the European Commission launched the digital product passport registry, which will contain information about different products, such as their origin, reuse options, usage instructions, or regulatory compliance.

It will normally be available through a QR code or a similar digital medium. It will increase the transparency of supply chains and help consumers make informed decisions.

The new registry creates a secure and centralized repository that allows hosting the metadata linked to the passports (such as their unique identifiers) without storing data about specific products, which remain in the hands of economic operators or digital product passport service providers.

As part of the Regulation on Ecodesign for Sustainable Products, it will house information about digital product passports in the textile, steel, aluminum, tire, furniture, ICT, and energy-related product sectors, as well as those included in sectoral legislation, such as construction products, toys, and detergents.

The registry is an essential step to enable the full implementation of the digital passport for different products, which is expected to be applied for the first time to certain types of batteries starting February 18, 2027.

In addition to the registry, the Commission has launched a support service and a testing environment to help stakeholders prepare for the deployment of the digital product passport. This complements the specific digital product passport website, recently created, which offers guidance, technical documentation, and support tools ahead of the February 2027 deadline for the application of the digital product passport to certain large batteries.

More information about the digital product passport registry can be found online.
