The United States threatens, Russia makes war, China rebuilds an empire… And Europe? An essay written by former Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya (January 13, 2020 – July 12, 2021), who has negotiated with Putin, Xi Jinping, and Washington. And she is clear that Europe can still win.

Starting from an uncomfortable dystopia – Europe in 2049, fractured, vassal to other powers and without historical will – Arancha González Laya outlines in this book a lucid analysis of the current geopolitical situation of the continent. Not as a science fiction exercise, but as a warning that this future is possible, and avoiding it requires acting now.

Solos en el mundo (Alone in the world) examines the forces that have altered the world order: the strategic withdrawal of the United States, Russia’s war as a break in the European security order, the Chinese model of expansion through contract and debt, geoeconomics as an instrument of coercion, the algorithms that fragment the democratic space from within, and the competition for resources that will mark the coming decades.

González Laya argues that only a more integrated Europe will be able to sustain itself in this environment. Her experience in leading international organizations and in direct negotiation with those who set the rules of the game allows her to analyze from within the strengths and weaknesses of the Union, and to argue clearly that Europe can still decide its destiny.
