Bangladesh aspires to preside over the United Nations General Assembly during the 2026-2027 period. To this end, it will present the candidacy of Touhid Hossain, current advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Khalilur Rahman, in the election that will be held on June 2 in New York, as announced by Ambassador Masudur Rahman during the reception he hosted in Madrid to commemorate the 55th anniversary of its independence.

Although he did not explicitly ask for it, the ambassador suggested that his government expects support from Spain, among other countries, to ensure that the veteran diplomat —with deep experience in multilateral affairs and a solid reputation as a mediator between the Global North and South— secures the position where, more than ever, it is necessary to work to “forge consensus on peace and security,” he recalled.

In the bilateral sphere, Masudur Rahman confirmed that “Bangladesh and Spain enjoy an excellent and growing relationship that extends far beyond trade.” After mentioning Inditex as one of the main companies established in Bangladesh, he emphasized that his country “offers enormous opportunities” in other sectors such as tea, jute, leather, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, refrigerated seafood, the blue economy, ceramics, ICT, light engineering, and hospitals.

To encourage investors to explore those opportunities, he recalled that the Dhaka government “has established a liberal investment regime that is very attractive and greatly facilitates business activity” in a framework of improved social security and welfare thanks to the approval of “the Family Charter and the Pharmaceutical Charter.”

“The Embassy,” he added, “remains committed to working with the Government of Spain to explore new opportunities and strengthen our partnership, which reflects shared aspirations and a multilateral commitment to global issues of mutual interest.”

Spain is the second largest destination for Bangladeshi exports within the EU, while this country is the fourth largest trading partner of Spain in Asia.

In this regard, the ambassador was confident that “the relations between Bangladesh and Spain will continue to deepen in many emerging areas,” while recalling that Spain also hosts one of the largest Bengali communities in the EU, whose “hard work, entrepreneurial skill, and legislative nature make valuable contributions to the Spanish economy and help strengthen the relationship between our two countries.”
