The ‘Truth Commission’, responsible for investigating human rights violations during the War and the dictatorship, has been officially established in the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory.
This body, which arises within the framework of Royal Decree 265/2025, aims to clarify the events that occurred and contribute to a democratic memory.
Under the presidency of Baltasar Garzón, the Commission is composed of twenty members, including full and alternate members, who will form working groups alongside experts in various topics. Among the members are notable figures such as Helen Duffy, Julián Casanova, and Araceli Manjón-Cabeza, who will contribute their expertise to the investigation process.
The Commission will not only focus on the systematization of existing knowledge but will also seek to delve into less documented aspects of human rights violations. Its work will culminate in a final report that will include conclusions and recommendations aimed at ensuring the reparation of victims and preventing the recurrence of these events, thus consolidating a democratic memory that recognizes the dignity of those who suffered these violations.
