China has positioned itself as the major competitor of the U.S. in the development of Artificial Intelligence. Its differentiation strategy is to bet on open AI models, which it seeks to implement in its national sectors and export internationally. New Chinese AI companies are emerging, born from strong local talent and the long-term technological commitment of the government. AI is seen by Beijing as a driver of a new advanced economy, while also offering resilience at a time of strong geopolitical tensions. The development of Chinese AI brings both opportunities and challenges for the EU and Spain.
After some welcoming words from Yasmín Paricio, coordinator of Politics, Society, and Educational Programs, Casa Asia, the webinar will be presented by Blai Guarné and David Saurí, Master’s Degree in Global Studies of East Asia (UAB). It will be moderated by Irene Masdeu Torruella (Autonomous University of Barcelona, UAB), professor of Chinese society and culture in the Master’s Degree in Global Studies of East Asia at the UAB. A lecturer at this university, she has been a postdoctoral researcher for the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange (Taiwan) and has participated in numerous research projects on Chinese migration. Among her most recent publications is a chapter for the Handbook of Chinese Migration to Europe (Brill, 2025).
The event will feature Javier Borràs Arumí, CIDOB: Barcelona Centre for International Affairs, researcher in technology, geopolitics, and China at CIDOB: Barcelona Centre for International Affairs, and professor of economics at La Salle University. He has worked at IESE Business School, the European Commission, and the EFE Agency in Beijing.
