The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, stated during the inauguration of the II Geopolitical Conferences of the Spanish Institute of Strategic Studies (IEEE) that the Spanish Armed Forces are a reliable reference for ensuring peace and security globally.
The conferences will be closed today, May 28, at the Royal Site of San Ildefonso, in Segovia. Over 80 experts have participated in these three days, discussing the challenges of the current international context.
Robles emphasized the importance of Spain’s participation in international coalitions under NATO, the UN, and the EU, as well as in critical areas such as cybersecurity and response to humanitarian crises. In her speech, she highlighted the commitment of the 4,000 Spanish troops deployed abroad, reaffirming that “Spain continues to be a serious, reliable, and committed partner” in the realm of global security.
The conferences, organized by the Higher Center for National Defense Studies (CESEDEN), will provide a space for the analysis of contemporary strategic issues, including energy security and the evolution of international alliances. The inaugural conference was led by Javier Colomina, NATO’s special representative, who addressed the transformation of the international order and the challenges facing Europe and Spain in an increasingly complex world.
Likewise, on a visit to the Ferrol Arsenal, Defense Minister Margarita Robles expressed her appreciation for the equipment of the frigates ‘Cristóbal Colón’ and ‘Méndez Núñez’ for their valuable contribution to European security. These units have been operating in the south of Cyprus, integrated into the French Aeronaval Combat Group, with the aim of protecting the European territory against rising tension in the Middle East.
Robles stressed that “the ability, preparation and commitment of Spain to peace” are evident in every mission of the Armed Forces. In this context, the minister stressed the importance of the aerial threat detection functions performed by the frigates, which have been key in the operation in the eastern Mediterranean, where the Spanish presence has ensured the security of the southeastern flank of Europe.
In addition, Robles thanked the members of the Navy for their work and professionalism during more than two months of mission, highlighting that “Ferrol, Galicia and all Spain have plenty of reasons to be proud” of the performance of these troops. The 31st surface squadron, to which the frigates belong, is characterized by its high availability, flexibility and ability to adapt to different contexts, reaffirming Spain’s commitment to international stability.
