Spain defended at the EU Competitiveness Council the need to accelerate and strengthen European industrial policy. During the meeting, the Secretary of State for Industry, Jordi García Brustenga, emphasized that Europe’s strategic autonomy must be based on the development of strong, resilient, and competitive industries.
In his speech, García Brustenga highlighted the urgency of acting in key sectors such as steel, aluminum, and the chemical industry. These sectors are fundamental to ensuring industrial autonomy, quality employment, and progress towards a green and digital transition. According to the Secretary of State, industrial competitiveness must be a priority on the European agenda, with the aim of strengthening supply chains and reducing strategic dependencies.
One of the central points of the Council was the progress of the Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA), proposed by the European Commission. This regulation seeks to strengthen the industrial base, accelerate decarbonization, and improve the competitiveness of strategic sectors. García Brustenga emphasized that Spain is committed to a balanced approach that promotes investment in industry, ensuring that Europe remains an attractive destination for external investments, but always under European rules.
