The Minister of Youth and Childhood, Sira Rego, has presented in Turin a proposal to establish a permanent and multilateral working group under the auspices of the United Nations. This initiative aims to regulate digital environments with the goal of safeguarding children’s rights against the abuses of large technological platforms.
During the Ibero-American ministerial meetings on Youth and Childhood, it was agreed to create a Ibero-American Observatory focused on child well-being, especially in the protection of minors in the digital realm. In this context, Rego suggested replicating this initiative within the framework of the UN, highlighting the need for effective regulation to oversee the activities of large platforms and organize the digital space.
Rego emphasized the importance of algorithmic transparency as a key tool to protect children, warning that algorithms, far from being neutral, are designed with specific objectives that can negatively impact children’s rights. Additionally, she proposed implementing digital literacy policies for children, adolescents, and their families, in line with the National Digital Environments Strategy that her department is developing.
