The diplomacy of the Holy See is characterized by its institutional continuity, operational discretion, and global presence, as has been evident during the pope’s visit. Within this framework of effective discretion lies the trajectory of Piero Pioppo, the current apostolic nuncio in Spain and Andorra, tasked with representing the pope before civil authorities and channeling relations between the Vatican, the local Church, and the State in a European context particularly sensitive to the balances between the religious and the political. After the whirlwind of the papal visit, it is time to get to know the nuncio.

Piero Pioppo was born in Savona (Italy) on September 29, 1960, and was ordained a priest in 1985 for the diocese of Acqui Terme. His academic training corresponds to the classic profile of the Vatican diplomatic corps: he holds a doctorate in Dogmatic Theology and a degree in Canon Law. In addition, he has passed through the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, the institution responsible for training diplomats of the Holy See, where future nuncios are prepared in areas such as international law, bilateral relations, and the functioning of the Roman Curia. From the beginning of his career, his profile was oriented towards the institutional sphere and the international dimension of ecclesial ministry.

Three decades in diplomatic service

Pioppo joined the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See on July 1, 1993, beginning a career marked by geographical mobility and the progressive assumption of responsibilities. His first postings were to the apostolic nunciatures in South Korea and Chile, two contexts with very different political, cultural, and religious realities, where he gained experience in dialogue with civil authorities and in following the life of local churches.

He was later assigned to the Section for General Affairs of the Vatican’s Secretariat of State, one of the most relevant coordination centers of Vatican diplomacy. In this body, he performed functions related to the monitoring of international affairs and the articulation of the institutional activity of the Holy See, during a time when the Vatican was strengthening its presence in multilateral settings and in strategic regions.

In 2006, he was appointed prelate of the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR), a central institution in the financial management of the Vatican. This step provided him with additional experience in the internal structures of the Holy See before fully returning to the diplomatic career.

Responsibilities in Africa and Asia

The leap to head of mission occurred in 2010 when he was appointed titular archbishop of Torcello and apostolic nuncio in Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. In this position, Pioppo directly represented the Holy See before the governments of both countries, in addition to maintaining a constant relationship with the episcopal conferences and the local ecclesial structure. This type of postings requires a combination of skills: political diplomacy, knowledge of the ground, and management of complex situations in diverse institutional environments.

In 2017, he was appointed apostolic nuncio in Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, which placed his work in a particularly relevant environment for interreligious dialogue. A year later, he also took on the representation of the Holy See before the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), expanding his area of action to a regional space with increasing economic and political weight. This stage reinforced his experience in multicultural contexts and in dynamics of cooperation between different religious traditions.

Appointment in Spain

On September 15, 2025, pope Leo XIV appointed him apostolic nuncio in Spain and in the Principality of Andorra, succeeding Archbishop Bernardito Auza.

The nunciate in Spain constitutes one of the most significant diplomatic representations of the Vatican in Europe, both for the historical weight of the country in the Catholic tradition and for the institutional relevance of the relationship between Church and State. In this context, the nuncio plays a role that combines diplomatic functions with ecclesial responsibilities.

From a formal point of view, the nuncio performs functions comparable to those of an ambassador. However, his role goes beyond that: he maintains a permanent relationship with the episcopate, conveys orientations from the Holy See, and participates in the consultation processes for the appointment of bishops, a key aspect in shaping the ecclesial structure of the country.

A profile of institutional continuity

With a career spanning Europe, Africa, and Asia, Pioppo brings to his current position accumulated experience in diverse political and cultural scenarios. In addition, he is fluent in several languages—Italian, Spanish, English, and French—and has direct knowledge of the internal mechanisms of the Holy See and its international action.

His profile fits the classic model of the Vatican diplomat: specialized training, a prolonged career abroad, and a progressive assumption of responsibilities at different levels of representation. In a context where the diplomacy of the Holy See continues to play a relevant role on the international stage, his appointment in Spain responds to that logic of institutional continuity and consolidated experience.
