For years, China has concentrated much of the media attention on Asia. However, recently, India has been gaining prominence as a strategic partner and key player in the so-called Global South, while its relevance for Europe and Spain grows, in a context marked by the diversification of alliances and the strengthening of economic relations between the European Union and India. In this framework, India is already Spain’s second trading partner in Asia.
Today, India has established itself as one of the major emerging powers of the 21st century: the most populous country in the world, one of the main global economies, a member of the G20 and BRICS, and an increasingly influential actor in the international geopolitical balance.
Based on the experience of Spanish journalists who have worked on the ground, this conversation will explore what image of India is conveyed in the media in Spain, and whether this reflects its growing global weight or, on the contrary, the country continues to occupy an intermittent place in the news agenda.
The event will feature Elisa Reche, director of elDiario.es in the Region of Murcia. Former correspondent for the newspaper Público in India and Southeast Asia; Jordi Joan Baños, correspondent for La Vanguardia in Asia, based in Bangkok. He was a correspondent in New Delhi (2006–2016), and Paloma Almoguera, editorial director for Asia-Pacific at Agencia EFE and delegate in Thailand. The moderator will be Josep Casaus de la Fuente, director of Communication at Casa Asia.
