The Government of Spain commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) with a statement that highlights its commitment, solidarity, and dedication.

Since its creation on October 7, 2005, the UME has intervened in more than 830 missions, both nationally and internationally, becoming a fundamental pillar for the security and well-being of citizens during situations of serious risk and disasters.

The UME, composed of 3,500 personnel from the different branches of the Armed Forces, has demonstrated its capacity to respond to emergencies such as wildfires, floods, and natural disasters. The unit was established to provide a rapid and effective response to exceptional situations that threaten public safety, reinforcing citizens’ trust in the Armed Forces.

Throughout its trajectory, the UME has evolved and adapted its legislative structure, highlighting Royal Decree 521/2020 which regulates its organization and functioning. With a focus on continuous training, its personnel are prepared to act autonomously in various emergencies, contributing to civil protection and national defense. Among its most recent achievements is its participation in international rescue and assistance missions, consolidating its role as a reference in crisis management both in Spain and abroad.
