The ambassador of the League of Arab States in Spain, Malek Twal, passed away last Tuesday after a delicate and long illness.  The Jordanian diplomat had been serving as the head of the League of Arab States Mission in Madrid since November 1, 2021.

Before taking over the direction of the Mission in Spain, Ambassador Dr. Malek Twal held various diplomatic and high-responsibility official positions in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Throughout his professional career, he contributed to representing his country and strengthening its diplomatic presence, and earned wide respect and recognition for his professional competence, integrity, and the dedication with which he performed his duties.

The website of the Arab States Mission in Madrid states that “with his passing, the League of Arab States Mission in Madrid loses its head and an exceptionally valuable diplomat, who left a deep mark on his career and who, through his effort and dedication, helped strengthen its presence and role. He will also remain in the memory, recognition, and affection of his colleagues and all the people who had the opportunity to know him and work with him.”

There have been numerous condolence messages. Notably, Casa Árabe highlighted that “he was always attentive to the issues affecting the region, known for his kindness and good heart. May the earth be light upon him, ambassador,” alongside a photo with the director, Miguel Moro. On the other hand, the Hispano-Arab Intercultural Circle (CIHAR) expresses its sorrow in the words of its president, Abdo Tounsi, with these words: “We express our sincerest condolences to his distinguished family, as well as to his friends, loved ones, and the entire diplomatic community that had the honor of sharing his work and dedication to strengthening ties between the Arab world and Spain. Rest in peace.”

The Arab League’s diplomatic mission in Spain has announced that a book of condolences is now open following the death of its president, Ambassador Malek Twal. Those wishing to express their condolences in writing may do so at the mission’s headquarters located at Calle de Caleruega, 81, 4º B, Line 1, Madrid. The book will be available from Friday, August 7, to Friday, August 14, 2026, between 12:00 and 14:00.

Alternatively, those who prefer to send their messages by email may do so to madrid.mission@las.int.
