Next Monday, May 25 at 6 PM, the Sefarad-Israel Center (calle Mayor, 69) will present the book Máximo José Kahn Nussbaum, the Sephardim of Greece and the Spanish Legation in Athens during the Spanish Civil War, which will feature the participation of its author, Matilde Morcillo Rosillo, a doctor in Contemporary History and a tenured professor at the University of Castilla-La Mancha.

Specialist in the history of Sephardic communities, her research focuses on the evolution of the community of Thessaloniki from the Balkan Wars to World War II, as well as the role of Spanish diplomacy in the protection of Jews in Europe.

The work addresses the trajectory of Máximo José Kahn Nussbaum and his activity in Thessaloniki and Athens during the Spanish Civil War. From his diplomatic responsibilities, he promoted measures that facilitated the recognition of Spanish nationality to Sephardic families, a determining fact for their survival during the Nazi occupation of Greece. This episode connects with other actions of Spanish diplomats such as Sebastián de Romero Radigales, also studied by the author.

The volume also recovers the unfinished project of a Sephardic ballad collection, reflecting Kahn’s commitment to cultural preservation. The session will allow for contextualizing his figure within a broader history of diplomatic networks, Sephardic memory, and displacements in 20th-century Europe. Free entry until full capacity is reached.
