The Spanish Government condemned yesterday “unequivocally” the latest attacks against the UNIFIL contingent at the Spanish base Miguel de Cervantes, which resulted in the death of a Serbian blue helmet and left several soldiers injured, including a Spanish military personnel. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, said that “the attack must be investigated and its perpetrators held accountable.”
The Government conveyed its most sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the victims, as well as to the Government and people of Serbia, according to a statement from the Ministry, which adds that “Spain reiterates its recognition of the committed and sacrificial work of the soldiers of the UNIFIL contingent, carried out under conditions of extreme violence.”
“The Government of Spain,” it continues, “urges compliance with resolution 1701 and the ceasefire agreed between Lebanon and Israel, as well as to respect international law and international humanitarian law and to protect the security of peacekeeping forces.”
“Spain calls for full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon”, the statement concludes, “as an indispensable condition for peace and security in the region, and reaffirms its commitment to continue supporting the brave measures taken by the Government of Lebanon to restore the monopoly on the use of force.”
