‘Trumpism and global reconfiguration’, by José Antonio Gurpegui Palacios

Trumpismo y reconfiguración global

Director of the Instituto Franklin-UAH and Professor of North American Studies in the Department of Modern Philology at the University of Alcalá de Henares, José Antonio Gurpegui Palacios (in the photo), presents his latest book, Trumpism and Global Reconfiguration, the Tortuous Path to a New World Order.

The current tensions between Russia and the West that have led to the War in Ukraine have their roots in the Russian perception that Europe broke promises made after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union.  Time will tell if the war in Ukraine should be interpreted as a unilateral invasion or as a defensive action within the dynamics of Western grievances.

In any case, a conflict that could have been confined to a regional dispute has acquired a significance comparable to that of World War II, as it precipitates the reconfiguration of the global order. The reelection of Donald Trump as President of the United States, along with his America First policy reversing the principles of traditional American liberal diplomacy, has contributed to transforming the global geopolitical architecture. In this new scenario of a multipolar world without Western hegemony, Europe will tend to occupy a secondary role, while China and India, perhaps alongside the United States, emerge as the hegemonic poles.
