The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, received the Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, at the Palacio de Viana. Together, they discussed the importance of the enlargement of the European Union in the current context, analyzing its possible consequences and the internal reforms necessary to integrate new members and streamline decision-making.
On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Spain’s accession to the European Union, Albares emphasized the indissoluble connection between Spain and Europe, stating: “Nowadays, Spain cannot be conceived without Europe, nor Europe without Spain.” He defended enlargement as a means to strengthen the stability and security of Europe, arguing that adding new members would expand the internal market and increase the EU’s influence on the global stage.
Furthermore, Spain supports Ukraine’s accession, considering it the best guarantee for its future, and reaffirms its commitment to the integration of the Western Balkans. Albares also emphasized the need to move towards true European sovereignty, ensuring that Europe has the capacity to make decisions autonomously, without relying on third parties in strategic areas.
