The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, highlighted the technical and human effort of the Air Surveillance Squadron No. 2 (EVA 2), during a recent visit to its base. The minister emphasized that this unit has consolidated itself as a fundamental pillar in the modernization of Spain’s Air Surveillance and Control System and has the highest operational availability in Europe within NATO.
EVA 2, located in Villatobas (Toledo), has the main mission to collect and transmit radar data, essential for the country’s air sovereignty. Robles emphasized the importance of the high qualification of its personnel, stressing that “the commitment of our Armed Forces to security and peace” is evident in their daily work. The modernization of the system includes the implementation of the Lanza 3D radar, capable of detecting stealth aircraft, drones, and missiles in three dimensions, which represents a significant advance in national defense.
This radar, which began operating in EVA 2 in October 2024, not only expands the detection range but is also resistant to electronic interference, ensuring its effectiveness against current threats. Additionally, its interoperability allows for the exchange of information with NATO’s Integrated Air Defense and Anti-Missile System, a critical aspect for the security of allied countries in Europe. With a multidisciplinary team of nearly 70 people, EVA 2 faces the challenge of maintaining the operability of the Lanza 3D and contributing to the defense of airspace against new threats.
