The Supreme Pontiff is deploying an intense agenda since Saturday, when he arrived in Madrid, until June 12, when he will say goodbye to Spain in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. León XIV is combining institutional meetings and popular events in Madrid, where he still has to visit the Congress tomorrow. On Tuesday, he will inaugurate and bless the Tower of Jesus Christ of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. And he reserves a strong message of global migration governance for his stay in the Canary Islands.

The diplomacy of the Holy See has launched one of the most strategic deployments in its recent history with this apostolic trip to Spain by Pope León XIV, which transcends strictly pastoral matters to delve into high international politics. The visit of the Bishop of Rome includes a comprehensive agenda of 12 official speeches and over 2,500 kilometers traveled, distributed across four key locations: Madrid, Barcelona, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Through these venues, the Vatican seeks to consolidate its influence in European debates on social cohesion, cultural heritage, and migration integration.

Madrid: the political core and institutional dialogue

Few can say they have been able to gather more than a million people in the center of Madrid for hours, many hours (there were not a few who started their wait at dawn), and that of that long million, no one moved even in the moments of greatest heat, which pressed eagerly.

Well, León XIV can say it. His second day in Madrid has been as marathon-like as the first. Since 9:30, when he arrived at the City Hall and, after greeting the Royal Family, received the keys to the city from Mayor José Luis Martínez Almeida, the Pope has continued to demonstrate that he is in excellent physical shape.

Under a sun that has been heating the asphalt of the city more as the hours passed, the Corpus Mass has been developing for an hour and a half, during which the Pope has continued to send powerful messages of deep social character: “No one can kneel before the Lord and despise their brother.”

After finishing the mass in Cibeles Square, León XIV returned to the Nunciature, where he held a private meeting with members of the Order of Saint Augustine, before heading to the Movistar Arena, where in the afternoon he participated in the event ‘Weaving networks with the world of culture, art, economy, and sport’. The day ended with a private dinner at the residence of the Archbishop of Madrid, José Cobo.

On the strictly institutional level, the Pontiff will have high-level bilateral meetings with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, at the Apostolic Nunciature, and with members of the Spanish Parliament in the Congress of Deputies. Beyond the offices, Madrid will host events of enormous public attendance, such as the massive Corpus Christi Mass in Cibeles Square and a massive meeting with diocesan communities at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, balancing the state agenda with social mobilization.

Barcelona: culture, reconciliation, and heritage culmination

Tomorrow, June 9, the Pope will move to Barcelona, a city where the cultural and social vector will take center stage. Upon his arrival, the Holy Father will preside over the prayer of the Midday Hour at the historic Cathedral of Barcelona. True to his line of attention to the most marginalized people, the Catalan agenda includes a significant visit to the Brians 1 prison, which has a mixed module and where he will hold a dialogue with inmates.

Likewise, the Pontiff will ascend to the Monastery of Montserrat to share a prayer and lunch with the Benedictine community. He will also visit the parish of San Agustín in the Raval neighborhood, where he will meet with the Augustinian community, to which he belongs. But undoubtedly, the great milestone of his stay in Barcelona will be the celebration of the Holy Mass at the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, the chosen setting to preside over the historic inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ, a monumental symbol that places the city at the epicenter of global sacred architecture.

Gran Canaria: the humanitarian and pastoral focus

The arrival of León XIV in the Canary Islands on June 11 responds to a long-matured geopolitical priority by papal diplomacy: the Atlantic migration crisis. The first stop of the convoy on the island of Gran Canaria will be at the Port of Arguineguín, where the Pope will directly listen to the testimonies of migrants and will make a floral offering in memory of the victims of the sea.

The trip will continue with an ecclesial aspect at the Catedral de Santa Ana, where León XIV will preside over a closed-door meeting with bishops, priests, deacons, seminarians, and agents of the island’s pastoral care. The day will culminate with a massive Eucharistic celebration at the Gran Canaria Stadium, projected to accommodate nearly 50,000 faithful in a high-impact community event.

Tenerife: migration border and state farewell

The last stage of the apostolic journey will take place on Friday, June 12, on the island of Tenerife. The Pontiff will land at the Tenerife North-Los Rodeos Airport to immediately head to the “Las Raíces” Reception and Internment Center, a critical point in the management of migration flows where the Holy Father will reaffirm the Vatican’s message on human dignity at the borders of the European Union.

Subsequently, he will hold a public meeting at the emblematic Plaza del Cristo de La Laguna. As a closing of this historic itinerary through Spanish territory, the Pope will deliver his last homily at a massive mass in the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, before state authorities officially bid farewell to the Vatican delegation on its return to the city of Rome.
