Planas demands more funds for Common Agricultural Policy at the European Council

The Spanish minister rejects national co-financing and defends that more budget should be allocated to the CAP to make the community agricultural sector more competitive

The Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Luis Planas, has highlighted the progress in the negotiation of the new Multiannual Financial Framework during the recent European Council. However, he emphasized that this progress is insufficient.

Spain is seeking a increase in funds for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), insisting that at least current levels must be maintained without national co-financing.

During the Council of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries in Luxembourg, Planas referred to the structure of the community budget for the period 2028-2034. Although a definitive agreement is not expected until the end of the year, the minister advocates for a larger financial allocation and for the preservation of the common nature of the CAP, ensuring that it is essential for a competitive agricultural sector capable of facing future challenges.

Planas also expressed his rejection of the European Commission’s proposal on national co-financing, warning that this measure could harm the unity of the market in the EU. Additionally, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the proposal on fertilizers, calling it insufficient and emphasizing the urgency of implementing measures that maintain fertilization and, consequently, levels of agri-food production.
