Spain has consolidated itself as the second country in the European Union in terms of projects awarded in the Advanced Grant 2025 call, only behind Germany.

This result reinforces the country’s position as one of the most competitive in attracting funding for scientific research, highlighting its leadership in the field of European science.

The ERC Advanced Grant call is designed for established researchers with exceptional trajectories and funds projects that have the potential to generate significant advances in various disciplines. In this edition, a total of 319 projects will be funded across Europe, with a budget of 838 million euros, reflecting a 31% increase in participation compared to the previous call, with a total of 3,329 proposals submitted.

Of the 29 projects funded in Spain, 41% are led by foreign researchers, which highlights the international appeal of the Spanish scientific environment. The variety of projects covers diverse fields such as biomedicine, quantum physics, and artificial intelligence, evidencing the competitiveness of the research system in the country. This aligns with the Choose Europe initiative, which seeks to strengthen Europe’s capacity to attract top-level scientific talent.
