‘The pillars of human evolution’, to understand the past and embrace the future

On June 17, the Museum of Human Evolution in Burgos presented the book The Pillars of Human Evolution, a collective work signed by six internationally renowned scientists -Francisco C. Ceballos, Mercedes Conde-Valverde, Marcos García, Álvaro Ibero, Javier Mar, and Ignacio Martínez- under the direction of Eudald Carbonell and Igor Parra.

Millions of years ago, in an African landscape undergoing profound climatic transformations, some primates began to change their relationship with the environment. They not only adapted but started to transform it. Since then, the history of our species has been one of progressive construction in which genetics, diet, technology, communication, and symbolism intertwine to shape who we are today.

Eudald Carbonell and Igor Parra, along with a team of specialists in genomics, paleoanthropology, and archaeology, propose in this book a new and ambitious interpretation of human evolution articulated in six major pillars. Through them, they reconstruct the process of hominization and humanization as a biological phenomenon and, at the same time, technical and social.

From the first stone tools to the contemporary technological revolution, this essay invites us to understand our trajectory as a species and to reflect on the role we play in the future of the planet. A rigorous and accessible perspective to understand the past and to consciously face the challenge of what is to come.
