On June 28, the International Day of LGTBI Pride is commemorated worldwide, a day dedicated to the claim for real and effective equality for lesbian, gay, trans, bisexual, and intersex people.

This year, the Government of Spain has approved an institutional declaration reaffirming its commitment to LGTBI+ rights, highlighting its leadership position in Europe in this area, according to the 2026 Rainbow Map by ILGA-Europe, which places Spain as the most advanced country in guaranteeing LGTBI+ rights.

The date of June 28 coincides with the Stonewall riots of 1969 in New York, which marked the beginning of the modern struggle against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In 2018, Spain officially recognized this celebration by establishing the National Day of LGTBI Pride, thus reinforcing its commitment to equality and the defense of the rights of this community.

The Spanish government has implemented various policies and laws in recent years to combat discrimination and guarantee the rights of LGTBI+ people. This includes the Comprehensive Law for Equal Treatment and Non-Discrimination, as well as the Law for the Real and Effective Equality of Trans People, which seeks to ensure that all citizens can live in freedom and equality. Additionally, the 028 service has been launched, a helpline for victims of hate crimes and discrimination due to LGTBIfobia, which operates 24 hours a day and offers specialized assistance.
