Reescrituras bíblicas cervantinas

Within the framework of the lecture series The Sephardic Universe in the Work of Miguel de Cervantes, the Centro Sefarad-Israel presents an online conference with Ruth Fine on Thursday, April 23 at 7 PM about the presence and rewriting of the biblical tradition in Cervantes’ work. An analysis of intertextuality, polyphony, and Hebrew culture in the Golden Age.

The work of Miguel de Cervantes can be read as a space for dialogue with the biblical tradition, in which the sacred texts are reinterpreted and transformed into a literary key.

In this online meeting, professor and researcher Ruth Fine will address how these echoes traverse Cervantine narrative and theater, configuring a complex web of meanings.

Ruth Fine is a professor of Spanish Literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and one of the leading international specialists in Golden Age literature. She is the president of the Association of Cervantists (for the study and dissemination of the life and work of Miguel de Cervantes), and her research focuses on Cervantes’ work, biblical intertextuality, and the presence of Hebrew in Spanish literature. She has published numerous studies on Cervantes, including Cervantine Biblical Rewritings, where she analyzes this dialogue from a comparative and philological perspective.

Through concepts such as rewriting, polyphony, and intertextuality, the session will explore the presence of biblical imaginaries in works such as La Galatea, the Novelas Ejemplares, Cervantine theater, and the Quixote. The analysis focuses on the literary function of these references, showing how Cervantes integrates and resignifies the Hebrew and biblical cultural heritage in the context of the Golden Ages.

The conference will allow for a deeper understanding of the intersection between biblical tradition and Spanish literature, as well as the intertextual richness of a key work of literary modernity. The conference can be followed on the Activity channel on the YouTube channel of the Center.

It’s quite a paradox that, after many years writing about gastronomy, I’m now dedicated to practicing journalism in the field of diplomacy. At my age, I honestly believe it’s the best way to solve problems. As the motto says: “They say he never surrenders,” and that’s where I put all my effort.
