El enemigo de mi enemigo

Next Wednesday, April 22 at 6 PM, Casa América presents in its Simón Bolívar Room the book The Enemy of My Enemy. Spain in the War of Independence of the United States of North America (1775-1783), by Gonzalo M. Quintero Saravia (in the photo). Free entry until full capacity.

This historical study examines the crucial but often forgotten role that Spain played during the War of Independence of the United States. Far from being a mere spectator, the Hispanic monarchy of Charles III became a decisive actor in this global conflict that redrew the geopolitical map of the 18th century and laid the foundations of the contemporary world.

Gonzalo M. Quintero Saravia analyzes in detail the complex motivations that led Spain to get involved in the conflict: from its historical rivalry with Great Britain to its own territorial interests in North America, through its delicate relations with France and its reluctance to openly support rebels who questioned monarchical authority. Through documents from the time and the testimonies of its protagonists, the book reconstructs the Spanish military operations in the Mississippi, the Caribbean, and the siege of Gibraltar, as well as the intricate diplomatic negotiations that took place in the European courts. An essential work that offers a new perspective on how Spanish participation was decisive for the birth of the American nation and reveals how, in the complex board of international politics, Spain knew how to play its cards to express the maxim that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.”

This presentation is part of the activities surrounding the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, with which Casa de América will serve as a platform for meeting, reflection, and artistic creation of the different realities of America. This celebration offers an opportunity to reflect on the historical, political, and cultural construction of the United States, as well as its relationship with the rest of the American continent.

Participating in the event are Gonzalo M. Quintero Saravia, author of the work, and Manuel Lucena Giraldo, director of the Chair of Spanish and Hispanic Studies of the Universities of the Community of Madrid.
