The Ministry of Industry and Tourism, through the Secretary of State for Tourism, has awarded the distinction of National Tourist Interest Festival to the ‘Water Race’ of Lanjarón, in Granada. This celebration stands out for its uniqueness, combining festive, ethnological, and symbolic elements related to water, purification, and the popular traditions of the night of San Juan.
The Secretary of State for Tourism, Rosario Sánchez, highlighted the active participation of the inhabitants of Lanjarón, who transform their streets into a large festive stage. Water becomes a symbol of coexistence, identity, and renewal, maintaining a close connection with the historical and natural heritage of the municipality, known for the quality of its waters.
With this distinction, the ‘Water Race’ joins the festivals of tourist interest in Andalusia, being the thirteenth in the region and the number 163 in Spain. This festival, which is celebrated at midnight from June 23 to 24, has evolved from a local tradition, started in 1980, into an attractive event for national and international visitors. The central act consists of an hour of water throwing among participants, complemented by tastings of local products, live music, and traditional rituals of the night of San Juan.
