Madrid Book Fair: ‘La ciudad de los girasoles’, by Marta Solano

Journalist and writer Marta Solano (in the photo) presents her latest book, La ciudad de los girasoles (The City of Sunflowers), a moving portrait of childhood as spoils of war. How far would you go to protect those you love most?

Winter falls over Kryos alongside the relentless invasion of the Red Empire. The war devours everything, forcing sixteen-year-old Liv to become her family’s only shield. Her world is blown apart when her two younger brothers are kidnapped in a perverse plan for the deportation of minors. They are not collateral damage: they are the most precious spoils of war. With no other weapons than her instinct, Liv and her older brother embark on a race against time amidst crossfire, re-education camps, bombed hospitals, and ghost towns.

The City of Sunflowers is a suffocating thriller and a raw portrait of modern wars, inspired by real events. In a territory where wild dogs no longer fear bombs and the enemy does not always wear a uniform, trusting the wrong person can be fatal. Marta Solano offers the reader a deeply human novel that gives voice to a lost generation and pays tribute to those anonymous heroes who risk their lives in rescue operations. In its pages, we discover that even in the darkest night, love can become a flame of hope.

Marta Solano (Madrid, 1979) holds a degree in Journalism from the Complutense University of Madrid and has developed much of her professional career at Spanish Radio and Television (RTVE), where she has presented news and sports programs. Her foray into literature is characterized by a deep sensitivity to human conflicts. The author will sign copies tomorrow, Saturday, May 30, at 6 PM at the booth 127 of the Madrid Book Fair.
