Fundación Casa de México presents ‘Specters. Enigmas of the gaze’

Espectros. Enigmas de la mirada

As the official venue of PhotoEspaña, until September 13, the Fundación Casa de México presents the exhibition Specters. Enigmas of the Gaze.

This exhibition consists of a collective show of seven contemporary photographers: Adriana Calatayud, Alinka Echeverría, Cannon Bernáldez, Humberto Ríos, Laura Cohen, Paola Dávila and Tomás Casademunt. Curated by Laura González-Flores, PhD in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona.

Beyond its descriptive function and cataloging of material reality, photography has always explored its capacity to imagine. There are practices that, through technical or optical manipulations, generate ambiguous, suggestive, and spectral images.

This exhibition brings together the work of seven Mexican photographers of recognized trajectory whose works invite us to go beyond mere identification of the visible. Eccentric in form and rigorous in process, these pieces require an attentive gaze, sustained over time, and a willingness to question what the image seems to affirm.

In these series, the enigma of the gaze becomes evident: meaning is not exhausted in what is photographed, but emerges from the imaginary and affective resonances that are activated in the viewer. Thus, the curatorial proposal presents a space for critical contemplation and shared sensory experience.
