Between absence and memory: the Sephardic in the work of Cervantes, at the Centro Sefarad-Israel

On Thursday, April 30 at 6 PM, the Centro Sefarad-Israel (calle Mayor, 69) presents an approach to the Sephardic universe in the work of Miguel de Cervantes from a historical and literary perspective with a lecture by Professor Rosa Navarro from the Autonomous University of Madrid. Free entry until full capacity.

In a context marked by the expulsion of the Jews from Spain, but in which their presence remained alive in the cultural imaginary, the session will analyze how Cervantes articulates the notions of the Hebrew, the Jewish, and the converso through his texts. Using examples from Don Quijote de la Mancha, the Novelas ejemplares, and his theatrical production, the Cervantine ambiguity regarding the stereotypes of his time will be explored.

Navarro Romero (Ciudad Real, 1982) is a writer and university professor. She holds a doctorate from the Autonomous University of Madrid, and her research focuses on literary theory and micro-narratives. In 2023, she received the Tigre Juan Prize for her novel Girl with a Monster Inside.

The lecture will also address the possible questioning that underlies her work regarding social hierarchies based on blood purity, offering a reading that puts literature, identity, and memory in dialogue. An invitation to rediscover the complexity of Cervantes and to reconsider his work beyond simplifying interpretations, within the framework of the Spanish Golden Age.

It’s quite a paradox that, after many years writing about gastronomy, I’m now dedicated to practicing journalism in the field of diplomacy. At my age, I honestly believe it’s the best way to solve problems. As the motto says: “They say he never surrenders,” and that’s where I put all my effort.
