On the occasion of the IX centenary of the birth of Averroes (Ibn Rushd) (1126–2026), Casa Árabe celebrates, from today until next Wednesday, April 29, at its headquarters in Córdoba (calle Samuel de Los Santos Gener, 9), an international congress with the participation of internationally recognized specialists.

The objective of this meeting, organized by Casa Árabe and the University of Córdoba, is to discover the legacy of one of the most relevant figures of the Andalusian era. Free entry until full capacity is reached. The congress will be conducted in English.

Over three days, internationally recognized specialists from universities and research centers in Europe, the United States, the Arab world, and Latin America will gather in Córdoba to analyze his legacy from an interdisciplinary perspective.

The meeting proposes a deep review of the historical, philosophical, scientific, and legal context in which Ibn Rushd’s work developed, as well as its projection in later traditions. Through five thematic sessions, the congress will address key issues such as legal thought and legal theory in al-Andalus, the relationship between philosophy and theology (kalām), logic and epistemology, natural and medical sciences, as well as the reception and transmission of his work in Hebrew and Latin contexts.

The program brings together a distinguished list of international specialists – among them Delfina Serrano, Cristina Cerami, José Bellver, Fouad Ben Ahmed, Catarina Belo, Richard C. Taylor or Maribel Fierro, whose research contributes to renewing the study of Islamic philosophy and its impact on global intellectual history.

Throughout the congress, the unique ability of Averroes to articulate reason and revelation will be highlighted, as well as his role in the transmission of Aristotelianism and his decisive influence on Latin scholasticism and medieval philosophy. Likewise, lesser-known aspects of his work will be explored, such as his medical thought, his conception of science, or his political positioning in the Almohad context.

This congress is part of the activities of the Universo Averroes program, which champions the figure of the Cordoban philosopher as a bridge between cultures and intellectual traditions, emphasizing his relevance in contemporary debates on knowledge, rationality, and coexistence. More information about the congress program and the presentations can be found on the website of Casa Árabe.
