Framed in the Dual Year Spain-India 2026, Casa Asia in Madrid presents this afternoon at 18:30 the conference The Birth of Buddhism and the Formulation of Indian Art.

This conference is the third session of the cycle that approaches Buddhism from different artistic manifestations, which help to understand its philosophy and spirituality. Free activity with prior registration.

On this occasion, a journey through the history of Buddhism in India and its artistic expression is proposed. It will cover the evolution of Buddhist iconography from its earliest representations, emphasizing the configuration of a new art in which Buddhism and its plastic expressions become catalysts for the pacification and unification of the first great Indian empire. The first architectural typologies will be analyzed: stambhas, stupas, temples, and monasteries, as well as the formulation of a sculptural language whose symbolism will endure to this day throughout Asia.

The conference will be led by Eva Fernández del Campo Barbadillo, a professor of Art History at the Complutense University, where she carries out her teaching work. Her research field focuses on the art of India and East Asia, as well as Contemporary Western Art, topics on which she writes numerous publications and curates various exhibitions. She is a visiting professor at different Spanish and foreign universities. She is a visiting researcher at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, at Flame University in Pune, at the University of Salamanca, and at the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London, among other institutions.
