Teatro de la Zarzuela closes its 25/26 season with ‘El gato montés’

El gato montés

The famous opera by Manuel Penella titled El gato montés (The Wild Cat), will be the show with which, from June 10 to 18, the Teatro de la Zarzuela will conclude its 25/26 season.

On this occasion, it will feature the stage direction of Christof Loy, who makes his debut at the flagship theater of Spanish lyric, and the musical direction of José Miguel Pérez-Sierra and Rafael Sánchez-Araña, the latter in the final performances.

Premiered at the Teatro Principal of Valencia on February 22, 1917, The Wild Cat is one of the few titles of Spanish opera that has managed to remain alive on national and international stages.

The new production is in line with the artistic direction of the Teatro de la Zarzuela aimed at the recovery, revision, and contemporary projection of the Spanish lyrical heritage, offering a new perspective on one of the most passionate and unique scores in our repertoire.

The opera tells a tragic story of love, jealousy, and honor in Andalusia, structured around the deadly rivalry between the bullfighter Rafael Ruiz “El Macareno” and the bandit Juanillo “El Gato Montés” for the love of the gypsy Soleá.

This opera is especially famous worldwide for containing the famous homonymous pasodoble that plays during the second act and became the quintessential bullfighting anthem. Tickets can be purchased at this link.
